In Istanbul, they still break plates and yes, porcelain ones! I think, as long as people are careful about not hurting themselves or others, it may be ok, though it is difficult when people are drunk.
By the way, I just saw a movie called "Head On" about a gay Greek-Australian guy in Melbourne. It was interesting, if a little depressing. It was showing a lot of Greek bars and restaurants. They did lots of Sirtaki and played lots of good Greek music. I recommend that you all see it.
