Have been watching the ethnicity discussion (and the one about the pope) with growing uneasiness, especially because most reproachful arguments brought forth have no historic foundation whatsoever (I study Byzantine history) but revealed a desperate need to beam with the role of the victim.

Take a look at the Italians: They are very aware of their cultural contributions (p.e. of the Renaissance and after) as well as their Roman ancestry, yet the Italians I've met derive their understanding of self from who and what they are today.
