The "Koumbaro/a" is the best man / or woman (or both).
This person plays a major part in the wedding ceremony
and also is supposed to play a major part in the
couple's life. The koumbaro becomes family and
traditionally carries the responsibilities as well.
For example (if the koumbaro is a man, and the husband
unfortunately passes on, the koumbaro carries some
responsibility for the wife and family (whatever is relevant)
Also, the koumbaro is like a guardian to the couple.
Helping them when in need. The tradition is also that the koumbaro
has the right or honor to baptize the 1st child of
the couple.
