This is so true and highlights the REAL meaning of the koumbaro or koumbara or both. It is so much more that just being a part in the wedding on the day. The importance of it all comes afterwards. Which it is so important you make this choice very carefully.

I was once married and tried to reach out to my koumbari - they did nothing. I am not saying that this is the reason why my marriage did not work but had they shown any interest whatso ever it might have helped in pulling my husband and I together and on the right track.

: The "Koumbaro/a" is the best man / or woman (or both).
: This person plays a major part in the wedding ceremony
: and also is supposed to play a major part in the
: couple's life. The koumbaro becomes family and
: traditionally carries the responsibilities as well.
: For example (if the koumbaro is a man, and the husband
: unfortunately passes on, the koumbaro carries some
: responsibility for the wife and family (whatever is relevant)
: Also, the koumbaro is like a guardian to the couple.
: Helping them when in need. The tradition is also that the koumbaro
: has the right or honor to baptize the 1st child of
: the couple.
: Hope this helps
