This is so true and highlights the REAL meaning of the koumbaro or koumbara or both. It is so much more that just being a part in the wedding on the day. The importance of it all comes afterwards. Which it is so important you make this choice very carefully.
I was once married and tried to reach out to my koumbari - they did nothing. I am not saying that this is the reason why my marriage did not work but had they shown any interest whatso ever it might have helped in pulling my husband and I together and on the right track.
