Doing family history research for my grandson, age 10. His gggrandfather, George Powell, (b. 1864 d. 1913), imigrated to Mobile, AL, USA from Agios Nikolaos Crete with Peter Patroni, (b. 1853). When he married Alice Collier in 1896, he used the name "George Paul". When he became a naturalized citizen in 1903, he used the name "George Powell". Supposedly he changed his name because no one in America could prounouce his Greek sirname. NEED help from the Greek community. Could his Greek sirname possibly have been Paulos, Paulakidakos, Paulakidas, or
Paulakidakis? Is there a particular name ending given to Greek sirnames from Crete, such as, "kos" or "kis"? Any information or suggestions as HOW to find his Greek sirname will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
