Responsibilities of Godparents for baptism, etc.

My husband and I are godparents to a baby boy soon to be baptized.

What are our traditional responsibilities for the baptism? We think that we are supposed to buy the "ribbons," the favors and a cross, but are there other items? Are there any guidelines for the ribbons and favors? Are there other things we should pay for?

After the baptism, what role do the godparents traditionally play in the life of the child?
