I'm also of Greek descent, and I pronounce my last name with a short "a" in the first syllable. Yes, it sounds like the English words "callous" and "callus,"
but that's the way my family pronounces it. The reasoning for this is that when my great-grandfather arrived in the US at Ellis Island, he chose to shorten his
name from "Kaloumenides" (which has the short "a" in the first syllable; it roughly translates to "welcome") to "Kallas."
Apparently, there are other spellings for "Kallas" such as "Kallis" and "Callas,"
but it is important to check the original (as in unshortened) name in order to
determine a true relation. Also, there are non-Greeks with the last name
"Kallas," such as people of Lebanese or Finnish descent.
Hope this helps you out!
