I have to say that I am surprised by some of the other replys to this post. While "greek culture" is apparently patriarchal, I am willing to assert that this is largely a "greek american" thing. Notice in Greece how the role of the woman is far more pronounced than in the U.S. In Greece, it seems to me, the appearance of patriarchy is maintained only until the wife/mother very subtly asserts her real authority. Clearly, this is not the case in the United States. It is almost as if Greeks raised in the United States choose to live up (or down) to the trite ethnic characterizations that people on this board seem all to willing to perpetuate.
