It all started int he arly 1920's in Pireaus in the little underground boites frequented by the men who were refugees from Asia Minor. Plate breaking is the height of 'mangia' and also the way to request a song played by the night club band. You buy the plate and the money goes to the 'bouzouksi' Back then, if someone ordered a song with a plate (aka, the 'paragelia') only HE was allowed to dance to it. If someone else dared to get up, it could even end up in the first guy killing the second one -- breaking plates and, generally, the paragelia, was once very serious business. From there it morphed to sign of appreciation to the song you're hearing. In recent times it's been stopped in greece because people tended to get cut up pretty bad.

: Does anyone know how the tradition of smashing plates began in Greece?
