: : Aghia Lavra is a monastery situated just outside Kalavryta. It is where on March 25, 1821, Paleon Patron Germanos, a visionary priest, together with the leaders of the Greek revolutioners, declared independence from Turkish rule and officially started the struggle for Greek Independence. The views from the Monastery are unique and combined with the historical significance of the place give the visitor a unique unsurpassed experience. Not far from there, there is a huge cross which points the exact location where the German Nazis killed all the male population of Kalavryta during their occupation of Greece in World War II. I hope you get to visit the area sometime.
