The Ottoman Empire lasted 400 years in Greece and some 500 years elsewhere in Europe. The impact of the Empire can not be underestimated. It is a remarkable testimony of the cultural survival of the Hellenic race amidst this dark period. True other nations have been overrun but the difference is the loss of their culture in relatively shorter periods of time. For instance, the indigenous people of the Americas and Australia, in recent history; not to mention the loss of identify by Wales, Scotland and Ireland.

The difference is that Greece celebrates their Independence - an event which is young, much younger than the USA's indpendence. As a consequence - Greece was at war with Turkey over territorial issues a century later in 1922, and again during WW1 and WW2. The question here is Greece remains within her territorial waters not seeking to expand. However, Turkey reasserts her position at every opportunity. For instance we have the Cyrpriot invasion in 1974 and also the Imia event which occured some years ago. In fact Turkey asserts territorial claims over much of the aegeon (Greek islands include Rhodes, Mytiline) which they refer to as the Grey area.. and they continue to threaten and invade Greek air space through military maneouvres etc.

I implore you, how can neighbours be loving when one continually threatens and behaves abhorantly toward the other? If you look really close you will see many cultures such as Iran continue to relive, through dramatisation, the invasion of Alexander the Great, they consider it a tragedy so horrendous, due to religious implications, that they relive the event each year - a testimony they'll never forget. In fact The Jewish people do exactly the same thing with their celebrations during the Hanaka (falling during the christian christmas). What do you mean other cultures forgive and forget... if you ask me the human race harbours much resentment toward their neighour. I think that Greece is an open wound constantly be poked and proddened on by Turkey who have major alis in USA, who blindly support them in lieu of truth and decency as long as there needs are met - military bases. NATO is a joke for Greece.
