What you have heard is more or less true. The British had not offered to return the marbles, but they say that the Greeks have to where to take care of them. They are getting the museum built in hopes of convincing the british, and once it is built, i think they have to return them. They are indeed building the musuem.

: I was wondering if anyone knows the facts about whether the Elgin Marbles are going to be returned to Greece? My brother just returned from a vacation in Greece, and he had heard that the British offered to return them to Greece if the Greeks constructed a museum large enough to house them. My brother heard that the Greeks were indeed building just such a museum, and that the artifacts were to be returned very soon. Is any of this true? The story behind Lord Elgin's Marbles is quite remarkable, and it is hard to believe people could simply take pieces of such a beautiful creation as the Parthenon. I hope the marbles will be returned to their rightful place.
