I've never had that experience in Greece - and I'm a Greek born and brought up in England. I still live in England but when ever I return to Greece every year, I never hear that I'm not a true Greek. In fact, I often hear that because my family left Greece a long time ago, and that often Greeks of the exoteriko maintain traditions more than Greeks in Greece who have changed with Europe, that I'm often called 'more Greek than a Greek!'. You may need to choose your company more carefully - as you said, you may be just unlucky and those Greeks you spoke to were idiots.
