Why is the Ancient Greek pronunciation taught at schools in the West so different from the pronunciation of modern Greek
(e.g. the beta, theta, and the diphthongs ai, oi, ei, eu, au)? And i'm wondering if this is the same in Greek schools, that is, do you
learn different pronunciation of ancient and modern greek, or do you use the modern pronunciation also for Ancient Greek?
Is it possible to say which pronunciation comes closest to that of ancient Greek? I'd be grateful for any info on this topic.
