Greece vs Ellada

I wonder about something; Why is Ellada called Greece in english? In Norway we say Hellas, and that is almost the same as Ellas/Ellada. In Sweden they say Grekenland, and that sounds like Greece, but not like Ellada/Ellas.

Did Greece use to have another name before, is that the reason?

Anybody who knows?
